MERLIN 4
The Poisoned Chalice
Bayard, the king of Mercia, comes to Camelot to form a union. However, before he passes the two ceremonial goblets for Uther and Arthur to drink, Nimueh, posing as a servant, takes Merlin to one side and tricks him into believing that the goblets' drink is poisoned. Merlin promptly disrupts the ceremony and is forced to drink from the goblet himself - if he lives, he will be turned over to Bayard to use as he wishes.
However, after Merlin drinks the contents of the goblet, Nimueh secretly casts a spell upon him to poison him - causing Merlin to collapse. He is taken under the care of Gaius, who finds a poisonous flower petal in the chalice. He explains to Arthur that an antidote can only be made from the leaves of this same mortaeus flower, a flower which may only be found in the caves beyond the
In the forest where the cave is found, Arthur finds Nimueh disguised as a maiden, claiming to have been abused and abandoned by her master. Believing her story, he fights and defeats a cockatrice that guards the caverns. Afterwards, Nimueh tells him she knows where the flowers are found and leads him to them, only to cast another spell inside, causing the ledge he's standing on to collapse. Although Arthur survives by clinging to the cave wall and fighting off a giant spider, she leaves him there to die, telling Arthur that it wasn't his destiny to be killed by her.
While semi-conscious and under the effects of the poison, Merlin constantly mutters about Arthur's situation, suggesting he is either subconsciously using magic or has some kind of link with Arthur. Upon realising that it's too dark inside the cave, Merlin creates a sphere of ethereal light in his palm, which suddenly appears in a larger form near Arthur, hovering beside him to light his path. Arthur is soon attacked by many more spiders, but manages to reach across to pick the flowers needed to cure Merlin, and then clambers up the wall to the exit of the cave, guided by Merlin's light.
However, once Arthur returns to Camelot with the flowers, he is immediately arrested and taken to the dungeons. He begs Uther to take the flower to Gaius, but Uther, teaching Arthur a lesson in obedience, crumples the flower and drops it outside the cell. Arthur reaches through the bars to get it back.
Understanding that Arthur has returned, but also realising that no one is allowed to see him, Gwen poses as someone bringing Arthur's food in order to see if he had the flower. Arthur manages to secretly give her the flower, and Gwen returns to Gaius. In order to make the antidote work, Gaius secretly uses magic for the first time in the series, despite it being forbidden. Merlin then makes a fast recovery, and upon realising Merlin is awake, Gwen kisses him in happiness. He claims not to remember anything since he drank from the goblet.
Upon discovering that the poison was made with magic, Gaius reveals to Uther that Nimueh must have been behind it, and the potential war between Camelot and Bayard's country is averted. Uther then reveals to Arthur that the woman he met was Nimueh, and emphasises how he believes all magic to be corrupt.

MERLIN 3
The Mark of Nimueh
The witch Nimueh creates a tiny creature from clay, places it inside an egg and brings the creature to life with a spell. She directs the egg into the river which supplies Camelot with water. The egg surfaces inside a vault under the castle, and hatches.
Gaius and Merlin attend to a man who has died from unknown causes. They cover the corpse with a sheet so as not to alarm the townspeople. Gwen (Guinevere) encounters them when returning from a visit to her father, the local blacksmith; but Merlin manages to stop her from seeing what's under the sheet. Gaius examines the body and concludes that the man's disease was caused by sorcery. Before he can investigate any further, Prince Arthur arrives for Merlin and summons Gaius before the king. One of the royal court has died from the same plague that killed the first victim, and King Uther demands to know what Gaius has found out. Under pressure Gaius admits sorcery as the likely cause. Uther states that this kind of magic undermines his authority, and worries that if he cannot find the culprit then people will turn to magic for a cure. He orders Arthur to conduct searches of every house in town.
Merlin cannot understand why anyone would want to harm others with magic. Gaius tells him that magic corrupts, and is only as "good" or "bad" as its user. Their investigations are interrupted by Arthur and his guards, who search the house. Merlin panics because his book of sorcery is upstairs, but he manages to magically hide it while Arthur is distracted. Arthur leaves and Merlin becomes angry that Gaius will not let him use magic to help the victims. Gaius says the only way to help is to discover the source of the plague. He tells a frustrated Merlin that his time to be a great sorcerer will come.
By the time Arthur's search is concluded, many more victims of the plague have died. Uther commands him to impose a curfew and isolate the lower section of the city, where most of the victims lived. However, Gaius knows the plague is not spread through human contact because a royal courtier would not have been near the lower city. He and Merlin deduce that the disease is waterborne. Gwen's father, Tom, has contracted the plague, and Gwen begs Gaius to save him. She runs away sobbing when Gaius tells her there is no cure. That night, Merlin uses his magic to evade the royal guards and travels to the lower city to cure Tom.
Gaius tells King Uther that the contaminated water comes from the pump which supplies the city. Merlin pretends to be surprised that Gwen's father has recovered, but is not convincing enough. She wonders how he knew Tom would survive, and laughs at Merlin's explanation that he is "psychic." Arthur soon finds out that Tom has made a full recovery. The house is searched and Arthur finds the magical poultice which Merlin placed under the man's pillow. Gwen is arrested for witchcraft and dragged before the king. She is sentenced to death despite Morgana and Arthur protesting her innocence.
Merlin is reminded by Gaius that being a wizard carries responsibilities. He visits Gwen in the dungeon where she is being held, and promises not to let her die. He goes to the king's council and confesses to curing her father but Arthur manages to convince the king and his council Merlin is in love with Gwen and trying to protect her. Merlin in private criticises Arthur, but Gaius points out Arthur has likely saved his life. He and Gaius take a sample of the water inside the vault and discover the creature that Nimueh placed there. According to Gaius's book this is an Afanc, which can only be created by the most powerful of sorcerers. Once again Merlin travels to see the Great Dragon. He is told to use the "elements" available and that he is "one side of a coin," of which Arthur is the other. Meanwhile Uther, desperate to stop people dying, moves Gwen's execution forward to that evening.
With help from Gaius, Merlin works out that since clay is made from two of the four elements (earth and water), then he may be able to stop the Afanc with the other two: air and fire. Morgana comes to inform them that Gwen is to be executed in the evening. Merlin says he needs Arthur's help, and she convinces Arthur to do what is right. Merlin, Arthur and Morgana go down to the vault where the Afanc lurks. The Afanc attacks and Arthur kills it; the help of a spell from Merlin turns Arthur's torch into a powerful flamethrower, covering the Afanc in flames and destroying it. Nimueh is watching with the use of magic, and curses Merlin for ruining her scheme.
Gaius goes to the king and presents the remains of the egg which the Afanc hatched from. Nimueh's mark is engraved into the shell. Uther becomes very afraid and it is clear that this is not the first time she has threatened Camelot. Gwen is released and thanks Merlin for saving her. Morgana tells Merlin that she knows "his secret" and it is safe with her. Merlin initially interprets this as her knowing of his magical abilities, but when Morgana then says that Gwen is "a very lucky woman," her meaning becomes less clear.
From her vantage point, Nimueh swears revenge on Merlin.

MERLIN 2
Valiant
Knight Valiant, a renowned warrior, has asked a wizard to make him a beautiful shield decorated with painted snakes. The wizard uses a spell to bring the snakes to life, and is then killed by the snakes at Valiant's command. Valiant rides to Camelot and enters the annual sword tournament, which is traditionally won by Prince Arthur.
Meanwhile, Arthur and Merlin rehearse swordfighting. At home with Gaius, Merlin uses magic to summon a scroll that he must learn before the tournament tomorrow. Gaius warns him not to be caught using magic. When Merlin complains about having to work as Arthur's servant, Gaius states that Arthur is under a lot of pressure from his role as future king.
King Uther opens the tournament and both Arthur and Valiant easily defeat their first few opponents. Merlin later uses magic to complete his long list of chores for Arthur and instead uses the time to study from the book of sorcery that Gaius gave him. Back at the castle, Valiant is introduced to the king's ward Morgana and flirts with her. He vows to win the tournament so that he can have the privilege of escorting her to the celebratory feast.
While replacing Arthur's armour the following morning, Merlin hears the sound of snakes hissing. He examines the snakes on Valiant's shield and briefly sees one of them winking at him. Valiant comes in and confronts him, but Merlin successfully pretends not to have noticed anything. Arthur is impressed at Merlin's work on his armour, while Merlin privately admits to enjoying his job at the castle. During the day's fighting Valiant commands his snakes to attack an opponent. The injured knight, Ewan, is brought to Gaius and treated for the snake bite. Merlin rapidly works out what has been going on. He spies on Valiant and sees him feeding live mice to the snakes. Gaius cautions Merlin not to tell the king until it can be proven that Valiant has used magic to cheat.
Arthur and Valiant become the two competitors who will appear in the final. Gaius agrees with Merlin that Valiant cannot be allowed to kill Arthur. They conclude that if they can get the right antidote, Ewan will recover and can personally tell the king about the snakes. While Valiant is at dinner, Merlin goes into his chamber and examines the shield. He decapitates one of the snakes and saves its head. Valiant notices him running away and quickly discovers that Merlin has found out his secret.
Merlin presents the snake's head to Arthur and tells him what Valiant has done. He swears he is telling the truth, and Arthur requests an audience with the king. Ewan awakes but is again bitten by the snakes, this time fatally. When Ewan is found to be dead, Uther refuses to listen. He furiously chastises Arthur and has Merlin seized by the guards. Valiant requests for Merlin not to be punished and asks Arthur to concede the tournament to him. Arthur refuses, but apologizes to Valiant and withdraws his accusations.
A devastated Arthur orders Merlin to leave the castle. Merlin visits the Great Dragon and is again told that his destiny lies with Arthur. Gwen encourages him not to give up, and Merlin has an idea. Using a statue and Gaius's book, he attempts the spell that will bring the snakes to life. Arthur knows that Merlin is telling the truth about Valiant but still refuses to concede the tournament. He is willing to die rather than be thought a coward by his future subjects.
The morning of the final arrives. As Arthur and Valiant struggle, Merlin uses the spell. Valiant releases the snakes and orders them to kill Arthur. The prince decapitates them with a sword thrown to him by Morgana, before fatally wounding Valiant. The crowd wildly applauds his bravery.
At the feast, Morgana teases Arthur about being rescued by a woman. He arrogantly declares that he needed no help but indirectly apologizes to Merlin, and reinstates Merlin as his servant.

FIRST CHAPTER.........
The Dragon's Call
Merlin, a wizard on the cusp of adulthood, arrives in Camelot hoping to find a use for his magical powers. Instead, he learns that King Uther Pendragon, ruler of Camelot, despises magic and will sentence to death anyone who practises the art. Mary Collins' son is executed for this very reason, so she warns Uther that he soon will share the tears she has shed. She then incants a spell to cast herself away before he could intervene. Uther orders a festival to celebrate 20 years of peace in Camelot as a result of the ban on magic. Later, he argues with his ward Morgana, who warns him that he will only make enemies by continuing to persecute those who use sorcery.
Soon after, Merlin meets Gaius, the court physician, whose life Merlin saves when he falls from a balcony. Although Merlin denies it, Gaius believes he has magical powers, yet promises not to tell the king of these alleged actions. Merlin is soon given a room and Gaius realises that he has been sent to Camelot to be protected. Meanwhile, Mary Collins uses voodoo magic to kill Lady Helen, a famous singer scheduled to perform at the festival. She assumes Lady Helen's appearance, but her true form can still be seen in any reflection.
As Merlin sleeps, he hears an ominous voice saying his name repeatedly, and he soon awakes. At breakfast, Gaius purposely knocks over a bucket of water so that Merlin would use his powers to prevent it from falling. Gaius, having discovered Merlin's secret, warns him never to use his powers or he could be killed.
Merlin watches Arthur bully the servant Gregory, and tries to stop him. After he discovers that Arthur is the king's son, he is locked up for the night, and hears the same ominous voice calling his name. Gaius arranges his release, but Merlin is punished by being placed in the stocks, to have fruit and vegetables thrown at him. He meets Morgana's lady in waiting, Guinevere (Gwen), who shyly flirts with him. Gaius asks Merlin to deliver some potion for Lady Helen's voice. Merlin enters her room and there's no Helen; Merlin spots a voodoo doll and a book of enchantments, he begins to open it when he hears a door open and Lady Helen enters. Merlin hands the potion to her. Mary Collins watches him suspiciously as he leaves.
Merlin walks past Arthur and urges him into a fight using flails. Merlin uses his powers in order to win, though ends up losing when he notices that Gaius is watching the combat. Arthur realises there is something different about Merlin that he can't put his finger on, so decides to spare him.
Mary Collins, disguised as Lady Helen, arrives and is greeted by the king and dines with him. She comments on how it can't have been easy for Arthur growing up without a mother, and how the bond between mother and son is so hard to replace, alluding to her dead son. She then states that she is looking forward to her performance the following day.
Merlin is once again awoken by the same voice and decides to follow it, and ends up in a cave beneath the castle where The Great Dragon is imprisoned. He is told that he was given his magical gift for a reason, and that his destiny is to protect Arthur. Merlin argues against this, but soon learns that without him,
Lady Helen is given a complimentary basket of fruit, but her secret is revealed after the servant unveils her purposely blanketed mirror. The servant is then killed. Helen exits the room, prepared for the performance ahead. As the ceremony begins, Lady Helen of Mora arrives and sings. Her song puts everybody but Merlin under a sleeping spell - she's unaware he's unaffected. As the room becomes dark and coated with cobwebs, she unsheathes a dagger with which she plans to kill Prince Arthur. Merlin intervenes, using his powers to lower the chandelier onto Lady Helen. She is crushed, so the sleeping spell wears away and all spectators are awoken. Mary Collins's form of Lady Helen has also faded, and on the brink of death, she throws her dagger at Arthur. Merlin intervenes once more, using his powers to slow time in order to save Arthur from the incoming blade. He is saved, and Mary Collins dies. Merlin is appointed Arthur's manservant by the king, despite them both being upset by the idea.
In the final scene, Gaius gives Merlin a book of magic to study in secret, and Arthur calls for Merlin's first day of duty.
